Pan God of Woods
Pan is the God of woods and pastures. With the legs of a goat, the mountain peaks and rocky crests are his domain. As the evening falls, he plays sweet music on his reed pipe. When the notes of his music drift over the evening air, it is said that one can experience irrational fears …
The head, chest plate, arms and legs on this figure are made of polymer clay that was then painted with oils and given a matte finish. The horns on his head are covered in gold mica dust.
On this figure, the costuming is very complex. Layers of fabric have been shredded to suggest the forest: shaggy hangings from trees, ferns and undergrowth. All of the fabric has been hand-dyed to suggest woodland colors as well: various greens, browns and other earth colors. But the capriciousness and mystery of Pan, is suggested by some of the subtle jewel tones in the costume as well: he wears a vest of antique, gold fabric, and there are touches of gold in the depths of the fabric as well, which was achieved by rubbing mica dust on to it. Very thin strands of glass beads are woven through the various layers also.
Pan carries a staff of wood, with a gold ball affixed to it (the staff is removable.) The base is paper mache, and finished to resemble the roots of trees.
This is a fairly large sculpture: seated the figure is almost 26 inches.
