My Fantasy Figures...
My one-of-a-kind figures are certainly mixed media sculptures, involving at least two major sculpting processes--for one, the making of the head and limbs primarily out of polymer clay or paper mache, and secondly, the sculpting of the bodies out of paper mache, polymer clay, or even fabric.
In making the face and limbs, I generally prefer a white clay which I then oil paint over to achieve effects otherwise impossible such as capturing the glow of a fire, or the leaf-shadows of a summer forest on a face. My creations are not clothed or costumed in a traditional sense, since the "clothing" is composed of many layers and fragments of fabric that are often hand-dyed, distressed, torn or shaped. These pieces are then applied to the body with a technique that is much closer to creating a collage than to making a traditional piece of clothing. Treated fragments may be directly sewn on to the body, lain wet to harden into shapes, or at other times I might drape the fabric, fitting and arranging as I go to create the intricate layering process for each figure.
