Sylvanus
A Woodland Faery
Seated-approximately 13"; total height if standing-28"
one-of-a-kind
Sylvanus' head, hands and feet are sculpted of polymer clay, which has then been painted in oils. His costume is fabricated on to the body in segments, some of the fabric - pieces of linen, raw silk, pure silk - has been stiffened. The lacy robe and shawl overlay is antique cutwork linen that has been hand dyed and distressed. He has black faery eyes. His cap and base are embedded with glass. The base to which the doll is attached, is a complex mosaic of brown, lemon-green and dark green glass: my idea was to have it resemble, through the colors and shapes, the leaf litter on the forest floor.
According to faerie lore, Sylvanus is a guardian of the woodland and a faery that represents truth as well as fecundity. Thus he meditates upon a golden egg delicately held in his hand.
