Titania

Queen of the Faeries from
A Midsummer Night's Dream
22" seated
one-of-a-kind

This is my rendition of Shakespeare's queen of the faeries--Titania--one of his most well-known characters from a A Midsummer Night's Dream. In this sculpture I really played with the proportions to make her appear more fairy-like - her figure is quite elongated, and were she to stand she would be approximately 39 inches tall. There is another element on her that is often found on Morichika fantasy figures - something that is sized to our "real" world: in this case, a life-sized snail, which works in a real snail shell.

Viewers and collectors of my pieces have often told me, that some of the life-sized details creates an interesting and entertaining visual dilemma for them: for example, if the snail climbing on her is sized to our reality, then is Titania the size she really is in the faerie realm - or are both the snail and the figure visual distortions, and we can never be sure ...?

Titania's face and breast-plate, as well as her hands and feet are sculpted from polymer clay. Her costume, which is fabricated on to the body is an integral part of the sculpture: her clothing is shaped from distressed and stiffened pieces of silk, linen and antique lace. She has a pine-cone head-dress. Hazel eyes. The figure is in a permanently seated position on a base that represents the hollow of a tree. (The figure can be removed from this base.)
